Cacao has been revered for thousands of years in Mesoamerican cultures, where it was used in ritual drinks, ceremonies and offerings to the gods. Its sacred role inspired the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus to name the plant Theobroma cacao in the 18th century, meaning “food of the gods.”

Its unique qualities come from a compound called theobromine, a gentle cardiovascular stimulant that increases circulation and creates a feeling of warmth, openness and calm alertness.

Ceremonial cacao is also naturally rich in minerals and plant compounds that nourish the body:

Magnesium
Supports the nervous system, helping muscles relax and easing tension. Magnesium also plays an important role in energy production, mood regulation and healthy sleep.

Iron
Essential for the formation of red blood cells and healthy oxygen transport throughout the body. Adequate iron levels support energy, vitality and cognitive function.

Antioxidants
Cacao is high in polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress. They support cardiovascular health, healthy circulation and overall longevity.

Calcium
Important for strong bones and teeth, calcium also supports nerve signalling, muscle contraction and a healthy heart rhythm.

Mood-supporting compounds
Cacao contains natural compounds such as tryptophan, phenylethylamine and anandamide precursors. These support the production of neurotransmitters associated with feelings of wellbeing, connection and emotional balance.

Together, these nutrients support the nervous system, circulation, emotional wellbeing and hormonal balance, which is why cacao has become a valued companion for ritual, creativity, meditation, and women’s and men’s health practices.

This cacao comes from a small South Indian farm, where cacao trees grow alongside vanilla, rose and medicinal plants such as ashwagandha.

This farm was carefully chosen by Ygeia after extensive travel and research to ensure that the cacao is grown in healthy soil, ethical working conditions, and harmonious farming environments. The cacao is processed traditionally through harvesting, fermentation, sun-drying and stone grinding to create a pure cacao paste that retains its natural fats and nutrients
Unlike most commercial chocolate, this ceremonial cacao still contains around 55% natural cacao butter, which preserves its full spectrum of minerals, flavour, and therapeutic compounds.
The beans themselves are primarily Forastero with a small portion of Criollo, creating a smooth, balanced flavour while maintaining the potency of traditional cacao.
The result is a cacao that is rich, grounding, and deeply nourishing, perfect for ceremonial use or daily ritual.
