Frankincense / Boswellia Steam Distilled Oil

Simple overview:

What it is • Frankincense oil comes from the resin of the Boswellia tree.

• It has a warm, woody, slightly citrus smell.

 Main Benefits

  1. Helps Calm Stress and Anxiety

• Inhaling or diffusing or taking frankincense orally can help lower stress responses, calm the mind, and support emotional balance.

• Some compounds in the oil influence brain pathways linked with relaxation.

2. Support the Immune System

• Frankincense has natural antimicrobial and immune-modulating properties.

• This means it can help protect against harmful bacteria and support the body’s natural defences.

• Because of this, it’s sometimes used in oral care to help with gum health and fresh breath.

3. Anti-Inflammatory Effects

• The oil contains compounds that may reduce inflammation (similar to how some anti-inflammatory medications work).

• Because of this, people use it topically or in aromatherapy to help ease aches and joint discomfort.

4. Skin Health Benefits

• Supports firmer, smoother skin: Can help tone and improve the look of fine lines and ageing signs when used in skincare.

• Soothes irritation: Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties can calm redness and support healing after minor skin damage.

• Balances oily or blemish-prone skin: It may help refine pores and support clearer complexion.

5. Helps with Respiratory Comfort

• Inhaled frankincense may ease breathing discomfort and support airways, especially when diffused or used with steam.

6. Cancer Research on Frankincense (Boswellia) Laboratory studies (cells and animals)

• Some lab studies show that frankincense extracts or essential oil components can slow cancer cell growth or trigger cancer-cell death (apoptosis) in cultured cancer cells (breast, lung, pancreatic, bladder, etc.). These studies often use much higher concentrations than you’d get from topical use or diffusion alone.

• In these experiments, compounds in frankincense, like boswellic acids and α-pinene, appear to affect pathways involved in cell survival and death, and may disrupt signalling and cell cycle progression in cancer cells.

• Some animal studies have shown reduced tumour volume when frankincense extracts are formulated differently (for example, nano-emulsions) and given to mice.

How It’s Typically Used:

• Topical use: Mix with a carrier oil (like Kumkumadi) before applying to skin or sore muscles. It can also be used undiluted directly on skin for skin tone and improved texture. Be mindful when using around your eyes.

• Orally: 5 drops daily under tongue. Hold for some time, then sallow.

• Aromatherapy: Diffuse a few drops to create a calming atmosphere.
